How Months Are Counted
Months create problems that pure day-counting avoids. The issue is that calendar months are not equal: January has 31 days, February has 28 or 29, and so on through the year.
When a date difference calculator reports “3 months and 5 days,” it means 3 complete calendar months have elapsed. But what counts as a complete month?
The standard interpretation: one month has elapsed when the same day-of-month occurs in the next month. From January 31 to February 28 is typically counted as one full month (since February has no 31st day). From January 15 to February 15 is exactly one month. From January 15 to March 10 is one month and 23 days.

Years, months, and days is the human-readable breakdown. 2,289 days corresponds to 6 years, 3 months, and 7 days.
Business days requires a separate calculation that skips weekends and holidays. 2,289 calendar days contains approximately 1,635 business days (roughly 71.4% of calendar days, accounting for 2 days off per 7).
The appropriate unit depends entirely on what you are computing. For deadlines and timelines, business days are usually most relevant. For billing and financial calculations, total days is most precise. For human-readable summaries, years and months is most intuitive.

Days since January 1, 2000: As of April 8, 2026, exactly 9,594 days have passed since the turn of the millennium.

The 20th century ran from January 1, 1900, to December 31, 1999 — exactly 36,524 days, including 24 leap years.
A 40-year career: If someone starts working on June 1, 1985, and retires June 1, 2025, their career spanned exactly 14,610 days — including 10 leap years.
