Area Formulas for Every Shape: The Complete Reference

Why Area Calculations Matter

Area measures the amount of surface a two-dimensional shape covers. Whether you are buying paint for a room, planning a garden, calculating fabric for a sewing project, or estimating roofing materials, knowing how to compute area saves money and time. Each shape has its own formula, but most build on simple principles of length and width.

Common Area Formulas

Square: A = s², where s is the side length. A tile that is 30 cm on each side covers 900 cm², or 0.09 m². Squares are the simplest area calculation because all sides are equal.

Rectangle: A = l x w. A room measuring 5 meters by 4 meters has a floor area of 20 m². Multiply length by width, and you have the answer.

Triangle: A = (1/2) x b x h, where b is the base and h is the height measured perpendicular to the base. A triangle with a 10 cm base and 6 cm height has an area of 30 cm². For triangles where you know all three sides but not the height, Heron’s formula is an alternative.

Circle: A = pi x r². A circular garden with a 3-meter radius covers approximately 28.27 m². If you know the diameter instead, remember that radius is half the diameter.

Parallelogram: A = b x h. Like a rectangle, but the height is the perpendicular distance between the parallel sides, not the slant side length. A parallelogram with a 12 cm base and 8 cm height has an area of 96 cm².

Trapezoid: A = (1/2) x (a + b) x h, where a and b are the two parallel sides. A trapezoid with parallel sides of 6 cm and 10 cm and a height of 4 cm has an area of 32 cm².

Ellipse: A = pi x a x b, where a and b are the semi-major and semi-minor axes. An ellipse with axes of 5 cm and 3 cm covers approximately 47.12 cm².

Irregular Shapes

For shapes that do not match standard formulas, break them into simpler components. An L-shaped room can be divided into two rectangles. Calculate each area separately and add them together. A house floor plan might combine rectangles, triangles, and semicircles.

Another approach for truly irregular shapes is the grid method: overlay a grid of small squares, count the full squares inside the shape, estimate partial squares, and multiply by the area of each grid cell. Surveyors and architects use digital versions of this approach with coordinate geometry.

Units and Conversions

Area is always expressed in square units. Converting between them requires squaring the linear conversion factor. Since 1 meter equals 100 centimeters, 1 m² equals 10,000 cm². Common conversions include 1 acre = 43,560 square feet, 1 hectare = 10,000 m², and 1 square mile = 640 acres.

Mixing units is a frequent source of error. Always convert all measurements to the same unit before applying any formula.
