Acres to Hectares: Land Measurement Conversion Guide

Understanding the Units

An acre is a unit of land area commonly used in the United States, United Kingdom, and other countries with historical British influence. One acre equals 43,560 square feet, or roughly the size of a football field without the end zones.

A hectare is the metric unit for land area, used internationally and in scientific contexts. One hectare equals 10,000 square meters, or a square that is 100 meters on each side. The word comes from the Greek “hekaton” (hundred) combined with “are” (a metric unit of 100 square meters).

The conversion factor is straightforward: 1 acre = 0.4047 hectares, and 1 hectare = 2.4711 acres.

Conversion Reference Table

Common land area conversions:

For quick mental math, multiply acres by 0.4 for an approximate hectare value. For 80 acres: 80 x 0.4 = 32 hectares (actual: 32.37). Going the other direction, multiply hectares by 2.5 for a rough acre estimate.

Where Each Unit Is Used

Acres remain the standard in US and UK real estate transactions, agriculture, and forestry. Farm sizes, residential lots, and park areas are typically quoted in acres. American zoning laws, property tax assessments, and land surveys all reference acres.

Hectares dominate in continental Europe, Latin America, Africa, Asia, and Australia. International agricultural statistics, environmental reports, and scientific publications use hectares. The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization reports crop yields and land use in hectares.

When working with international real estate investments, agricultural trade data, or environmental research, being fluent in both units is essential. A 500-hectare ranch in Argentina translates to about 1,236 acres, which gives an American investor a familiar frame of reference.

Square feet and square meters are used for smaller areas like building footprints and room sizes. One acre contains 43,560 square feet or about 4,047 square meters.

Square miles and square kilometers measure larger regions. One square mile equals 640 acres or about 259 hectares. One square kilometer equals 100 hectares or about 247 acres.

Sections and townships are US survey units. One section is exactly one square mile (640 acres), and a township is 36 sections. These units appear in legal property descriptions in rural America and western states.

Understanding the hierarchy from square feet through acres to square miles helps you place any land measurement in context and convert between scales as needed.
